The bottom line - It seems to me that Shredder Classic should be OK for your stated needs. The late Harry Schnapp made a few that should be fine. There are a few free opening books in bkt format that you can get off of the internet. Having this larger "official Shredder" opening book might be important to you, but it's not really all that bad to not have it. And either gui can still use up to a 5-piece Nalimov tablebase set from your hard drive.ģ) A bigger opening book. Of course, a 5-piece Shredderbase set is better than a 4-piece Shredderbase set, but I doubt if you'd really notice much of a difference. Shredderbases are Shredder's proprietary type of bitbase files. Not a significant difference if all you're going to do is check your own games for blunders.Ģ) A 5-piece Shredderbase set in the Shredder 12 gui versus a 4-piece Shredderbase set in the Classic gui. For that extra 20 euros, you're getting:ġ) An almost 3000 elo engine versus a 2800 elo engine. Shredder 12 costs 20 euros more than Classic. It seems to me that your real decision is between Shredder 12 and Shredder Classic. It doesn't sound like that's what you want to do. It would only make a difference if you had multi-cpu hardware and were doing state-of-the-art analysis. It seems to me that Deep Shredder is massive overkill for your needs. You can either analyze each move of a game manually, or just have Shredder automatically analyze the entire game. The analysis is handled similarly to most other popular interfaces. The Shredder chess programs by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen provide a game playing and analysis tool for everybody and are accepted as one of the best chess programs of the world. But I'd hope that the features would be similar across the different platforms. Many functions are available for analysing one's own chess games. The level of play of the program can be adjusted to any chess playing strength, so that everyone can find an adequate chess partner. The link comparing the different versions that JoseO provided is very helpful. I'm a Windows Shredder 12 guy, so maybe a Mac Shredder guy will weigh in. Shredder Classic 5 Mac, Shredder 13 Mac and Deep Shredder 13 Mac combine extremely powerful chess play with easy handling.
